Some simple actions you can take to protect your family and your home include:
- Install deadlocks on all external doors
- Fit key operated locks to all windows
- Lock your doors and windows even when you are home – many burglaries occur while people are in another room, gardening or relaxing in their backyard.
- Install a peephole in your front door and always look before opening your front door
- Never leave spare keys outside your home – burglars know all the usual hiding spots
- Keep trees and shrubs close to your home trimmed and never leave a ladder lying around the garden.
- Plant spicky plants such as Bougainvillea near entry points to act as natural barbed wire
- Don’t leave boxes from recent expensive purchases out on view – plasma and LCD TV’s are a common target for burglars
- Secure garage doors with deadlocks or lockable padlocks / padbolts
- Experienced burglars know all the “secret” hiding spots within a home for money or expensive jewellery – keep your precious items in a home safe
- And finally always lock up! Every time you leave your home, even if it’s only for a short time.
